Cutting Your Energy Bills: Lighting Your Premises On A Budget

18 May 2023

Good lighting can be amazing for productivity, and it certainly makes your premises safer, but so many lights in one building can often rack up your energy bill. Every room needs some suitable illumination and sometimes, this means more than one source of lighting. So not only can the energy bills get higher, so does your lighting budget because fixtures aren’t exactly always cheap.

Fortunately, there are a few budget friendly ways to light up your premises without having to spend a fortune on lighting fixtures or bills.

Ways To Light Your Premises On A Budget

Utilise Natural Light

Natural light is a room’s best friend. It’s bright and provides rooms with plenty of light, even in those darker corners. Large windows or skylights are perfect for maximising the amount of light that comes in to the rooms in your premises. Of course, not every building is built with large windows or skylights so using natural light to your advantage can be slightly more challenging.

Instead, it’s better to focus on utilising any spots of natural light that you can. For retail businesses, this may mean putting the displays in the windows as this is what gives customers the impression of your business. An attractive display bathed in natural light means that consumers can see each product on display in the best possible, demonstrating exactly what that item would look like naturally without artificial lighting.

Try Switching To LEDs

Switching to LED lighting options is one of the easiest things you can do and now, LED bulbs are the most efficient option available on the market today. They last much longer than CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp) bulbs and 50 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulbs. As a long-term investment, LED lighting is perfect.

Compared to traditional incandescent, CFL, and halogen bulbs, LEDs require less energy. Once electric currents pass through the LED (Light Emitting Diode), light is emitted and the amount of heat energy that’s wasted is reduced. Therefore, they lower energy bills of any home or business.

Furthermore, energy efficient lighting can provide a quality of light that is superior to traditional lamps. And as we’ve said, good lighting equals staff productivity and completion of work.

Light Control

Flooding the room with bright, fluorescent lights is probably never going to be the best option. It’s intense, too much, and can end up giving you a headache. Modifying the lights you have, however, is something you can do instead to create a professional look that is more than bright enough. You can use a mixture of different toned LEDs to create different kinds of lighting for a retail premises.

Lighting that is bright enough for employees to work effectively and for consumers to shop comfortably without being too overbearing or intense. Not only are LEDs the cheaper option but if you get your lighting set up on a system where light intensity can be controlled, you can minimise the energy being used by all the lights you have on your premises.

Soften Your Lighting

A great way to soften your lighting in the case of it being rather bright is to opt for warmer tones when changing the bulbs. You could also use the things around you to soften the light – like bouncing it off a display or cardboard, for instance. Doing so slightly deflects the path of the light so that it’s not bearing straight down onto the faces of people passing by it.

By using things you already have to help soften your lighting, it helps you out financially. You don’t have to go out and buy new fixtures or bulbs but instead are using things you already own or have access to. This is also a good way for you to soften lighting naturally without having to pay for a dimming lighting fixture.
