5 Bathroom Lighting Mistakes And How To Avoid Them

In this blog, we’ll be looking at the most common bathroom lighting mistakes and how to avoid them. Whether you’re a lighting retailer advising customers, or an electrician fitting new fixtures, we’ve got you covered.

Mistake 1: Relying On A Single Overhead Light

One of the biggest bathroom lighting mistakes we see is only relying on a central ceiling fitting. While it’s understandable, being a simple and cost-effective choice, the cast unflattering shadows. This can make everyday tasks like shaving or applying makeup difficult.

How to avoid it: Try layering. Bathroom lighting works best when you combine ambient, task, and accent lighting. For example:

Ambient lighting: A flush or semi-flush ceiling light provides your overhead illumination.

Task lighting: Wall-mounted mirror lights give focused, shadow-free light where you need it most.

Accent lighting: LED strips under cabinets can add a touch of luxury and more depth.

Layering lighting is the key to improving functionality.

Mistake 2: Ignoring IP Ratings

Bathrooms are wet. It’s common knowledge that water and electricity don’t mix. Yet, we still see customers choosing fittings that aren’t suitable for the environment. It’s not just a design mistake; it’s also a safety hazard.

How to avoid it: Advise your customers about IP ratings. Each area of the bathroom is divided into zones that dictate what type of fitting can be safely installed:

Zone 0: Inside the bath or shower requires at least IP67 which is suitable for complete immersion in water.

Zone 1: The area above the bath or shower up to a height of 2.25m from the floor. An IP rating of at least IP65 is recommended.
Zone 2: This covers an area 0.6m wide immediately next to and all-around zone 1. The 60cm zone all around the sink should be treated as zone 2. It is recommended a rating of IP44, at least, be used in these areas.
Zone 3: This covers any areas outside zones 0,1, and 2. There is no IP rating recommended here for bathroom lighting unless it is thought jets of water may be able to reach this zone.

As a wholesaler, your displays and catalogues need clearly labelled IP ratings so installers and retailers can easily match products to zones. At Searchlight Electric, our bathroom lighting is carefully curated to make that process simple. It ensures style never compromises safety.

Mistake 3: Choosing The Wrong Colour Temperature

Some bathrooms can look cold and clinical, while others feel warm and inviting. That’s all down to the colour temperature of the light.

How to avoid it: Encourage your customers to think about how they use their bathroom. For a bright space, a cool white 4000K–5000K works well. For a spa-like atmosphere, a warm white 2700K–3000K is very flattering.

For the best of both worlds, an adjustable LED bulb allows the user to change colour temperature throughout the day.

Mistake 4: Poor Mirror Lighting Placement

Mirror lighting can easily fall flat. Adding lights above the mirror can cast shadows down the face. If they’re too high up or too far to the side, it can cause uneven lighting.

How to avoid it: For a flattering and functional light, add fixtures to either side of the mirror at roughly eye level. Integrated LED mirrors are also a great way to achieve this.

It’s recommended to demonstrate the difference good placement makes in store. A side-by-side display in your showroom can help customers visualise the improvement.

Mistake 5: Overlooking Style and Finish

While functionality is key, aesthetic is important too. Customers can sometimes focus so much on practical considerations that they forget the bathroom should look beautiful. The wrong finish or style can mess with the entire design.

How to avoid it: Coordination is key. Match finishes across fittings, mirrors, and accessories for a put together look.

We offer a wide range of bathroom fittings to suit every interior style. Stocking a variety of styles ensures retailers can meet every customer’s vision.
