Here’s the thing: it doesn’t matter if you’ve curated the perfect Pinterest board, purchased the most elaborate furniture from custom designers, collected pieces from your favourite artists to be on display... Without good lighting, your space will never be as inviting as it could be.

And no, we’re not just talking about the fittings themselves. Yes, everyone loves a stunning pendant and intriguing floor lamp. But here, we’re specifically talking about ‘lighting layout’.

Speaking from an interior designer’s perspective, lighting is never just a ‘finishing touch’. Actually, for many, it’s the starting point. Before a colour scheme is chosen or fabrics are shortlisted, designers will consider how a room is used, an ideal floorplan, and the desired mood for the space.

If you only get one takeaway from this blog, we want it to be this: you can’t rely on one ceiling light to do all the work.

Layered lighting creates dimension, mood, and atmosphere; it is practical and manipulates the eye's focus. A singular, overhead light can’t possibly do all that alone! By combining ambient, task, and accent lighting, you can immediately elevate any space with designer flair!

Let’s break down some lighting layout tips from designers at Searchlight Electric.

Stop Lighting The Room. Start Lighting The Experience.

Often, when designers talk about lighting, it’s in terms of activities rather than spaces.

What we mean by that is we consider all the ways that a space will be used. For example, a living room isn’t just for slouching around (while this is our preferred use). It’s for reading, watching TV, entertaining friends, playing games, decompressing after a long day, or even doom scrolling on your phone.

Each of these ‘activities’ or ‘moments’ requires a different mood. And how do we shift the mood? You guessed it, lighting.

So, you have your ceiling lights, which provide the overall illumination; then you have table lamps, floor lamps, and wall lights to create smaller pockets of light where it’s needed.

These different sources of light immediately make a room more interesting, as the eyes have somewhere to travel.

Corners Matter More Than You Think

This is a simple design trick that is shockingly overlooked. Do this, and you’re basically a fully-fledged interior design mogul.

Light the corners.

Dark, shadowy corners can make a room feel closed in. A touch of light in these areas gives the illusion of more space.

Take the Dragonfly Floor Lamp, for example. This antique brass floor lamp with stunning Tiffany glass would instantly add some vibrance and sophistication to the corner of any room. Pop an armchair beside it, and you now have the most inviting reading corner.

It’s all about making small changes that make a big difference. Don’t worry, minimalists, we’re not adding clutter here!

Create A Focal Point

Focal point. Visual anchor. Hero piece. They all mean the same thing.

It’s the thing that is the centre of attention in a space. What your eyes are immediately drawn to when you enter a room for the first time.

Think about a hotel reception. There might be a grand statue or fountain. Or in a quaint pub, it could be a roaring fireplace. Over a staircase, it could be a stunning pendant light.

Whether it’s a fixture itself or something else, lighting is one of the best ways to establish the focal point of a room.

Picture the Swizzle 4Lt Bar Pendant hanging over a long dining table. Not only does this pendant make a contemporary statement in your space, but it also establishes itself and the dining table as the main feature of the room.

Lighting doesn’t have to always be the star of the show. It can be used to highlight another feature that deserves attention.

Leave Some Areas In Shadow

Right, even though we’ve just told you to light your corners, designers aren’t trying to completely eliminate darkness.

It’s about striking a balance. Too much light, and you give people a headache. Contrast creates atmosphere.

Leaving certain areas slightly darker gives depth to a room and helps brighter areas feel intentional. It's why candlelight feels cosy and why hotel lounges never resemble supermarket aisles.

The Best Lighting Layouts Feel Invisible

Look, we’ve offered you all these lighting layout tips from designers, but the biggest key to well-planned lighting is that nobody notices it.

People don’t walk into a room and go, ‘wow, that wall light is positioned perfectly over that coffee tableeven though. Instead, they say:

"This room feels lovely."

"It feels so cosy in here."

"I could sit here all evening."

That’s what we’re going for here.
