In today's economy, it's becoming more difficult to understand or predict customer buying behaviour. There are a few reasons for this: fragmented customer journeys, justified shopping over casual buys and fast-moving trends, to name a few.
So, how can retailers ensure they're giving customers what they want?
When it comes to formulating the next ceiling lighting collection, retailers might look at current trends or the stock that's guaranteed to fly off the shelves. But will this guarantee sales growth? Will that information alone give you the competitive edge you need to stay ahead?
Here's some reassurance: there's more information for you to go off. You need to know where to look.
Every order, enquiry, visit to your website, abandoned basket and repeat purchase gives you another piece of the puzzle. Once you start putting all that data together again, deciding what ceiling lights to stock becomes less about gut instinct and more about understanding your customers.
Social media can make it seem like every customer wants the latest statement pendant or whatever colour is trending this month.
But we don't need to tell you that social media is not representative of reality.
Most customers aren't redesigning their homes from scratch. They're replacing an existing fitting, refreshing one room, or trying to solve a practical problem.
Maybe they've got a low ceiling. Maybe they need something bright enough for a kitchen but don't want a bulky fitting. Maybe they're looking for something that feels a little more special than the standard ceiling light they've had for the last ten years.
Looking at your sales history over several months can reveal patterns that aren't immediately obvious. Certain finishes might consistently outperform others. Particular sizes might work across several room types. Some fittings may sell steadily throughout the year, while others only really take off when a particular trend comes around.
Those patterns are far more useful than chasing every passing trend.
Buying data becomes much more useful when you look beyond what sold and ask why customers chose it.
Were they looking for a fitting that works with low ceilings/small rooms? Was energy efficiency important? Were they buying for a new-build property, updating a dining room, or simply drawn to a particular finish?
Understanding the reason behind the purchase helps you build a collection around real customer needs, rather than simply filling shelves with products you think they'll like.
Take Searchlight's Fence LED Flush in Gold, for example. Its slim 8cm profile, integrated LED and contemporary gold and white finish make it a very different proposition from a decorative crystal fitting. One customer might choose it because they want something modern and understated, while another might be looking for a low-profile fitting or the convenience of integrated LED.
The more you understand what your customers are trying to achieve, the easier it becomes to choose products that give them a reason to buy.
If one ceiling light is flying off the shelves, it's tempting to think you've cracked it. Just stock more of that.
But your customers aren't all looking for the same thing. A strong ceiling light collection should offer enough variety to cater for different styles, spaces and budgets without becoming overwhelming. That might mean balancing practical flush ceiling lights with decorative pendants, semi-flush fittings and statement chandeliers.
Think about the difference between the Empire 6Lt Flush in Chrome Metal & Clear Crystal and the Fence LED Flush. The Empire offers a more decorative, traditional feel, while the Fence is cleaner and more contemporary.
Sales figures only tell half the story. Your website can reveal what customers are interested in before they even buy anything.
Look at which ceiling lights get the most views, which finishes and styles people search for, which filters they use and which products are being added to baskets but not purchased. These patterns can highlight gaps in your range, but they can also show you where customers are struggling to find what they want.
If a product is getting plenty of attention but few sales, don't immediately assume you need to replace it. Check the price, product imagery and description, and make sure customers can easily find similar products or complementary wall lights.
Sometimes, the product isn't the problem. It's that your website isn't supporting the customer journey.
Making the right products easier to find can do far more for sales than simply adding another hundred products to your website.
The best-selling ceiling lights aren't always the newest or most expensive. More often, they're the products that consistently solve the same customer needs year after year.
That's why customer data is such a valuable tool. Sales history shows you what people buy. Website behaviour reveals what they're interested in. Customer enquiries highlight what they're struggling to find, while basket data shows which products naturally belong together.
