The Trade Guide to Lampshades

When it comes to interior design, lampshades are often viewed as a 'finishing touch'. Something that's sourced last minute after all the 'big' decisions have been made.

As lighting professionals, we have a different point of view.

The right lampshade can completely transform how a fitting looks and feels. It can turn just another shelf filler into a statement piece.

If you're a retailer and ordering trade lamp shades for the first time, this guide will make choosing, fitting, and reordering straightforward.

Start With The Material

Material selection for lampshades isn't just about aesthetics.

Yes, that will likely be your customers' first concern, but it's our job to educate them on how materials affect texture, light distribution, and the overall character of the fitting.

Take the Raffia Drum Shade. Its natural texture and clean white finish provide a softer, more relaxed look, making it an easy fit for contemporary, coastal and more traditional interiors. It's also compatible with B22, E14 and E27 lamp holders, offering customers plenty of flexibility.

For a more luxurious feel, there's velvet.

The Lux & Belle Velvet Drum Shade in Emerald takes things in the complete opposite direction from the Raffia Drum Shade. The emerald velvet exterior and reflective gold interior create a warmer, more luxurious look, while the 30cm drum shape maintains a traditional design.

And that's the point we're making. The material can completely change the personality of an otherwise similar fitting.

Fit Matters More Than You Think

It's easy to be tempted by the incredibly stylish, eye-catching shades, but if it doesn't fit the lamp properly, there's not really much point, is there?

Before ordering, check three things:

The Size

The diameter or width needs to work with the base of the fitting. If it's too small, the lamp will end up looking bottom-heavy. Too large, and the shade will completely overpower the base.

The Height

Consider the proportions of the fitting, rather than the shade in isolation.

The Lamp Holder Compatibility

This is often overlooked by customers who are browsing different shades. For example, the Raffia Drum Shade is adaptable to B22, E14 and E27 lamp holders, while the Extra Large Rectangular Shade in Black is adaptable to E14 and E27.

We'd recommend making this information obvious at the point of sale. The easier you make it for customers to understand if a shade will work, the easier making a sale is.

Lampshade Shapes

Drum, tiered, rectangular, tapered...

Each shape serves a different aesthetic. Offering variety here is key.

A drum shade gives a clean, balanced silhouette, while a tapered shade can create a more traditional look. Rectangular shades can work particularly well with longer lamp bases or larger furniture pieces.

For customers who want to mix and match, standalone shades give them more freedom to change the look without replacing the whole fitting.

A Shade Can Be The Reason For A Completed Purchase

This will probably pique retailers' interest most.

A customer might enter your showroom looking for a specific lamp base. Then, out of the corner of their eye, they spot a stunning shade. It works perfectly. It's a must-have.

The Eloise Green Pattern Tapered Shade is a good example of how colour and pattern can turn a functional accessory into an eye-catching design feature.

The same applies to statement materials such as raffia, bamboo and coconut-effect finishes. Searchlight's range includes everything from natural Raffia Drum Shade to the Sarah 3Lt Pendant, proving just how much texture can influence the finished look.
