Kitchen Lighting For Trade: How To Build A Collection That Sells

Retailers know that when it comes to lighting indecision, kitchens are the lead perpetrator.

And it's not hard to see why. A kitchen has more jobs to do than almost any other room in the house: cooking, dining, working, entertaining, midnight snacking, and so on. Each of those jobs wants a different kind of light. Customers want lighting that adapts to those demands but might not know how that could be achievable. What they DO know is that a single flush light isn't going to cut it.

This is all good news for retailers who know how to nail kitchen lighting collections.

Kitchen lighting isn't one product, one product category. It's various products working together in harmony. Here's how to build a collection that actually sells.

Ceiling Lights On Their Own Don't Cut It

A kitchen asks for layers of light, which can manipulate the mood or functionality of a room with just the flick of a switch.

For that reason, you can't stock kitchens the same way you'd stock a living room: A few decorative ceiling lights, maybe a floor lamp, and the jobs a gooden.

A kitchen requires:

  • Ambient Light: General lighting from the room.

  • Task Light: For worktops, improving visibility when completing a task, ie. chopping, mixing.

  • Accent or Feature Light: Draws attention, creates a statement.

Miss a layer, and the customer will rarely be satisfied with the finished result. Something's missing, even if they can't put their finger on it.

With all three layers in your range, you've got a far stronger sales pitch. You've completed the room for them, considering every detail. That's the extra mile.

The Island Is Where Customers Spend Their Budget

If there is one fitting worth getting right, it's the statement piece over the island/breakfast bar area.

It's the purchase they're most excited by. The bit that makes all the house guests go 'WOW' when they visit. When they walk around your showroom, this fitting is at the top of their list.

Bar pendants are built for this kind of space. The Royal 4Lt Bar Pendant in Antique Brass with Clear Ribbed Glass offers that traditional look with a touch of glamour.

For something warmer and more contemporary, the Sweden 3Lt Bar Pendant in Mocha Metal & Amber Glass spaces three lights evenly along the bar, ideal for customers who are after symmetry.

If your customer base skews more minimalist, the Linear LED Pendant in Latte is a great option to have in the mix. For smaller kitchens, its integrated LED, slim profile, no faff design fits the brief every time.

Customers Will Forget About Task Lighting

It's not very often that someone enters a showroom and asks to see your range of task lights for kitchens. Pendants and chandeliers can be very distracting; it's easy to forget about the stuff you need.

That being said, customers are more likely to ask for 'something that won't leave my countertops in shadows'.

A GU10 spotlight bar solves this need without needing to splurge on recessed downlights. It's an easy upsell that they actually need.

Another option is the Comet 5Lt Bar Spotlight. Each head rotates individually, so customers can manipulate exactly where the pools of light are aimed.

Alternatively, the Focus 4Lt Spotlight Bar does a similar job but with a cleaner, more understated finish. This is a great option for customers who aren't looking for the fitting to be a feature itself.

Keeping a selection of task lights in stock, alongside statement bar pendants, and you have just doubled the number of products in your customer's basket.

Don't Let The Island Pendant Carry The Whole Range

While it might be tempting, don't make the same mistake as your customers and get overly distracted by stunning pendants. You need the basics too.

A kitchen collection that only offers one finish, one size and one price point will lose customers who want that kind of look but have a smaller budget or space.

Whereas a strong kitchen collection balances pendants for islands/dining areas, quieter spotlights for functionality, and adjustable overhead lights for ambient light.

Another key detail in your collection is a range of finishes. Whether it's antique brass, matte black, or satin silver, make sure there is plenty of variation for your customers to build a consistent look in whatever style they favour!

The Main Takeaway

Kitchen collections don't need endless piles of stock. They need to have a curated mix of each lighting layer: ambient, task, and feature.
