Statement Lighting: How To Make A Feature Of Your Lights

We’ve seen a fair bit of discourse about this online, and we thought it was time to put our two pence in. The debate amongst interior designers is ‘should lighting be considered early on or is it a finishing touch?’

Here’s our take. To allow lighting to fade into the background is to waste a key design element that will transform any room.

In fact, we favour making a statement with your lighting

Somewhere along the line, we’ve all become obsessed with making everything match. 2026, everyone's colour capping; in 2024, it was the beige aesthetic, and in 2016, we were all living in monochrome.

Before you know it, your interior looks like everyone else's.

Think of lighting like jewellery. It brings the whole outfit together. And it doesn’t have to be the biggest object to make the biggest impression. A dainty pair of diamond earrings or a charm necklace can catch the eye. Same goes for lighting. Whether it’s a stunning structural pendant, an elegant chandelier, or a beautifully crafted table lamp, statement lighting tells people: this room was designed by someone who knows what they’re doing.

Every Room Needs A Focal Point

A key ingredient for every beautifully designed room is a focal point.

Whether it’s a roaring fireplace, an eye-catching artwork, or a feature wall, they pull focus and give you something to work around.

More often than not, it can be lighting.

Picture a pendant light, like the Heritage 10Lt Diner Bar Pendant, above a dining table. It instantly anchors and elevates what would be left as dead space. The pendant itself is showstopping, with a myriad of gold droplets suspended from a gold frame.

A focal point should create conversation and draw focus.

Why Statement Lighting Should Come First

We’re firm believers that an interior should be built around lighting.

Not an afterthought. Not a finishing touch. A main feature that everything else works around.

And not just from a design perspective, but from a practical one too. You’ll find it’s far easier to find dining chairs, paint colours, and home accessories that complement a jaw-dropping pendant than it is to spend weeks finding a light that somehow pulls everything together.

It’s Not About Brightness. It’s About *Atmosphere*

We can say with 99% confidence that nobody has ever walked into a home and said: ‘Wow, that’s 1200 lumens' (We leave that 1% because you never know; someone could be really into that)

The point is that people don’t remember the brightness of your lights

They remember the atmosphere. Mood. Warmth. How the room made them feel. Whether it gave them a headache or made them want to curl up in a ball and go to sleep. Did it help them focus or was there not enough light to read?

Good interior lighting does far more than illuminate a space. It creates mood, adds depth, highlights textures, and introduces layers that one bulb alone simply can’t achieve.

The best kind of statement light adds personality to a room before anyone reaches a switch. Take the Lux & Belle LED Table Lamp-Painted Gold Metal & Clear Acrylic for example. Its elegant, twisted structure looks luxurious, even when it’s not lit.

Bigger Doesn’t Mean Better

It’s a fair thought that when we say ‘statement’, most readers’ minds will go to ‘big’ or ‘oversized’.

But that’s not always the case.

In fact, sometimes the smallest, almost unnoticeable details can make the strongest impact.

Accent lighting is a great example of this. If you directed a spotlight toward a piece of art, the spotlight itself isn’t taking the glory. But it is silently supporting a statement piece and guiding eyeline to where it’s desired.

Even a distinctive table lamp can create the same amount of visual impact as a grand chandelier. It’s all about craftsmanship and choosing a design with real presence.
